Leicester celebrates An Exhibition by Globally Renowned Artist Kamal Koria showcasing work from over four decades.

 The midlands art scene is set to be invigorated with the upcoming exhibition "From India to Leicester," showcasing the extraordinary works of acclaimed artist Kamal Koria. The exhibition will run from September 21st to December 1st, 2024, at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery, located at 53 New Walk, Leicester LE1 7EA.  

 


Kamal Koria, known for his dynamic and colourful approach to contemporary Asian art, will present a collection of new works that visually capture domestic village life in India, by exploring human expression. Witness his bold, unique style, which merges traditional techniques with modern aesthetics and has captivated audiences worldwide.  

 

"The Indian diaspora have contributed considerably to the UK's Culture, businesses and industries. My father's contribution to the visual arts started as a defiant choice, then paved the way for young Asian creatives including myself, an artist curator.  This exhibition stands testament to his commitment to the arts."

  • Meet the Artist : Curator, Khyati Koria-green will host a talk along with Kamal, providing insights into his creative process and the inspirations behind Kamal's latest works. 27th October 2024 from 11:00am.   

 

About Kamal Koria:  

Born in Gujarat, India, Kamal Koria's journey to becoming a celebrated global artist began in Belgrave, Leicester. Despite being encouraged to pursue a career in the sciences, Koria's unwavering dedication to his artistic calling led him to overcome significant obstacles, His early years were marked by a constant push towards conventional academic paths, but his love for art could not be subdued. Through determination and hard work, Koria succeeded in the arts, making a name for himself on the international stage.  

Kamal Koria has established himself as a visionary artist whose work transcends cultural boundaries. His art has been exhibited in galleries across Europe and Asia, earning him accolades for his innovative use of colour and form. This exhibition marks his first major show in hometown of Leicester, offering a rare opportunity for the community to experience his captivating collection firsthand.  

 

Iconic Bhangra Album Covers and Diwali Card Designs:  

In addition to his fine art, Kamal Koria is celebrated for his contributions to popular culture through his vibrant Bhangra album cover designs. Known for the contemporary style, Koria created iconic designs for some of the most celebrated Bhangra bands from the 90's, including Alaap, Premi, DCS, and Sahotas. These designs have become synonymous with the genre and are cherished by fans worldwide.  

 

Koria's Diwali card designs are equally renowned, blending traditional motifs with contemporary flair. These cards, adorned with his signature style, have become a staple of Diwali celebrations, spreading joy and cultural pride during the festive season.

The exhibition "From India to Leicester" is curated by Khyati Koria-Green, a Leicester based artist, curator and lecturer. Khyati has supported her father throughout his career and seeks to explore what it means to be British, female and Asian in the arts.
