How the Art house film "Manthan" inspired my artistic journey.

Updated: Aug 3

I'm a true beliver of the power of influence from stories my father told me as a child to music, our minds are a fusion of our experiences.

As such, I find inspiration in many places, but one film that has profoundly influenced my work is Shyam Benegal's "Manthan."

This 1976 art house classic, set in the rural landscapes of Gujarat during India's White Revolution, tells a powerful story of community and empowerment.

"Manthan" isn't just a movie; it's a story of resilience and change. It portrays the milk cooperative movement in rural Gujarat in a way that has stuck with me.Watching the struggles and triumphs of the villagers as they work together for a better future inspired me to explore themes of community and strengh of women in my art.

The earthy aesthetics of "Manthan" have influenced my palette choices and textures. The film captures the essence of rural Gujarati life so authentically that it pushed me to simplify with bold shapes and colours. The traditional clothing and vibrant colors of Gujarat, which are prominently featured in the film, have significantly shaped my artistic style. Like these rural communities my paintings show a simplicity rarely found.

Manthan also shines a light on the enduring struggles faced by farmers in India , a theme that is still very relevant today. The resilience and determination of these farmers, amidst ongoing political challenges and environmental hardships, deeply move me. Through my art, I want to honor their courage and bring attention to their struggles, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and support for those who feed our nation.

This film has not only influenced the themes I explore but also reinforced my belief in the power of art to inspire change and foster a sense of community.

To find out more about Manthan, If you haven't seen the move - go and watch it! It's a must for all film enthusiasts.
